What is FM?
Facilities Management is the integration of multi – disciplinary activities with the built environment and the management of their impact upon people and the environment.
FM has traditionally been seen as care taking, repairing and maintenance of the facilities. But, infact it covers real estate management, financial management, change management, health and safety and contract management, in addition to building and engineering service maintenance, domestic services and utilities supplies which are the most visible responsibilities. Facilities Manager is relatively new profession in the corporate world requiring multi- skills such as technical and building related skills, business skills, human resources skills, communication skills etc.
FM is concerned with optimizing building performance while providing resource support for the core business to ensure commercial success overall. The efficiency of an organisation is linked to the physical environment in which it operates and if building and other facilities are not manage well.
They can begin to impact upon an organisation’s performance. Therefore, the Facilities Managers have extensive responsibilities and proper FM techniques which will enable organisation to provide the right environment for conducting their businesses on cost effective and value for money basis.
